My sister volunteers for the Humane Society in Ft. Meyers Florida where she lives. I'm not sure if they have the same set up here in Louisville area Humane Societies, but part of her job is to spend time petting the cats and kittens, and just to play with them. She loves it! Might be something worth looking into if you like animals.

These are the problems you want to have.

Capitolism and Democracy are mutually exclusive.

An excellent suggestion.  And YES, the Louisville Humane Society would LOVE to have more volunteers.  And there are more opportunities than even pet companion.  You can volunteer for working special events, or even putting out money donation collectors, (they look like little dalmations), at your local stores in your area.  There are dozens of ways to help.
