Does anyone have a DELL MINI or another "netbook" brand?

My question is...do you like it or dislike it?  I am considering it as a DD's "big gift" this year, but I really don't know much about them.  I am assuming it would be good enough for what she would use it for i.e. homework, research, email, and downloading pictures from her camera.  Will it work with our existing printer if she wants to print stuff?

All netbooks I know of can plug and play to a printer, or print to wireless ones. However, windows 7 came out and I'm not sure waht kind of compatibility problems it will have with older printers. My 5-year-old scanner won't connect to a vista machine, so it won't work with Windows 7 either. The scanner manufactourer made that call. So check the printer's documentation on its website for windows 7 compatibility, or esle get a model that still has XP.

Netbooks dont come with cd/dvd/ drives. So if DD wants to watch movies on it. No joy - have to get an external dvd player for that.  We have only used HP mini at work, and I'm satisifed, though the sound is very tinny in my opinion. Depends on how much of an audiophile your DD is whether that will be bothersome to her. Also Netbooks dont come with office last I checked - so the homework thing will also require you to buy Office. Microsoft sells student/home versions that are cheaper. Make sure whatever you get has a built-in web cam for skyping - unless from a parenting standpoint you don't want yer kid skyping.

Those are all the "bewares" I can think of. Otherwise, they are great, at least the HPs I've seen. Portable, easy, cute, and oh-so-convenient for doing work while you are waiting in the doctor's office, riding the bus, whatever.  I'd also advise getting an external backup device and backing up my documents and desktop to it - to keep all those pictures and music on it, so that when mr netbook starts to get bogged down (and he will) you can just reload him from scratch and not have lost anything.

Thanks!  You have been very helpful.  I think it would serve its purpose for a 13 year old.  Could you please explain "skyping"?  I am clueless LOL

Skype is a program by which people can talk to each other over their webcams (or text, or voice only...lotsa people use it for calling overseas becaue it's free.) So DD would turn on webcam and talk to friends who also had skype and webcams- she can see them and they can see her. (provided there's an internet connection) So that's fun, unless you don't like the idea of your DD showing people herself and the contents of her room. For Internet safety reasons, some parents don't like their kids to have the ability to show their faces live. Hope that helps.

Ah, thanks for that because I would prefer that she not be able to "skype"  LOL now I will sound like I know what I am talking about when I tell her that. Again thanks for all the info!
